Dr. Z Amps - Z-40 (Blackout/Silver Z) - 40-Watt Head

This Z-40 head from Dr. Z is a brilliant 40 watt version of the venerable Z-80 head, honored for its behemoth British tone. While retaining the dual EL-84 tubes in the output just like the 80, this version features two TAD Hi-Grade 12AY7 tubes in the preamp stage that reveal absolutely clear definition across the fretboard. A proprietary output transformer was created just for this design by Heyboer, built to Dr. Z specs to enable this 40 Watt approach.

The original “bootstrap” tone stack driver circuit from the previous amp is featured in the Z-40 for increased bandwidth and gain which was essential to its sonic signature. Unique to the Z-40 however is a switch between the original solid-state diode rectifier and a 5U4 tube rectifier for a bit more compression and grit. All of these features result in a sound that has superb clarity in the cleans and breakup, with a bloom in the higher gain that is extremely musical.
